Young Maker's Science of Getting Rich · Chapter 6

How Riches Come to You.

Wealth is not won by beating people. You give every person more in use value than you take in cash, you hold a clear picture of what you want with steady faith, and it comes to you through the minds and hands of others. Ask largely, because your desire for more is life itself trying to grow through you. Fifty-four sentences, explained in English and Malayalam.

Give more than you take. Then watch it come back.
The whole chapter in one chain

How wealth actually reaches you

Chapter 6 answers a practical question: once you stop competing, how does what you want actually arrive? Follow the chain.

Give more in use value than cash. Every deal must leave the other person better off than the price they paid. Never beat anyone; build a ladder so the people around you rise too. It is not magic; hold a clear picture of what you want and keep absolute faith. It comes through people, the Supreme Intelligence moving the minds of others to bring it to you. So ask largely, because your desire is life itself seeking to grow.

Give more than you take

SENTENCE 01

When I say that you do not have to drive sharp bargains, I do not mean that you do not have to drive any bargains at all, or that you are above the necessity for having any dealings with your fellow men.

Not driving sharp bargains does not mean stopping trade or living like a hermit. You still do business with people. You simply stop squeezing them.

SENTENCE 02

I mean that you will not need to deal with them unfairly; you do not have to get something for nothing, but can give to every man more than you take from him.

You never have to deal unfairly or get something for nothing. You can always give a person more than you take from him.

SENTENCE 03

You cannot give every man more in cash market value than you take from him, but you can give him more in use value than the cash value of the thing you take from him.

Here is the key distinction. You cannot hand back more cash than you take, you would go broke. But you can give something whose real usefulness to the person is far greater than the price they paid.

EXAMPLEPay a doctor 500 rupees and she does not hand money back. She gives you your health, worth far more than the fee.
SENTENCE 04

The paper, ink, and other material in this book may not be worth the money you pay for it; but if the ideas suggested by it bring you thousands of dollars, you have not been wronged by those who sold it to you; they have given you a great use value for a small cash value.

The paper and ink in a book cost almost nothing. But if its ideas earn you thousands, you were not cheated. You got huge use value for a tiny price.

SENTENCE 07

The gun is useful to him. It brings more furs and more food, lifts his whole life, and makes him rich. Fifty dollars of cash value, enormous use value.

EXAMPLEA simple tool that helps a worker do his job is worth more to him than an expensive showpiece.
SENTENCE 10

When you rise from the competitive to the creative plane, you can scan your business transactions very strictly, and if you are selling any man anything which does not add more to his life than the thing he give you in exchange, you can afford to stop it.

Once you move from competing to creating, you can check every deal honestly. If something you sell does not add more to the buyer's life than he pays, you can afford to stop selling it.

The measure of a fair deal

A deal is not fair because the price is high or low. It is fair when the buyer gets more real use out of it than the money he paid. Measure every sale by the life it adds to the person on the other side, not by what you can extract.

Every sewing machine ever built came from the substance's drive for fuller life. It can make millions more whenever people set it going with desire, faith, and action in the Certain Way.

What "not magic" means

You are not waiting for a sewing machine to appear in your room. You hold the clear picture, you keep the faith, and then normal life moves: a person is prompted, a deal is struck, a delivery is made, and the thing arrives through ordinary human hands. Your work is the picture and the faith. The delivery is the universe's work, done through people.

God wants those who can play music to have pianos and every other instrument, and to have the means to cultivate their talents to the fullest extent; He wants those who can appreciate beauty to be able to surround themselves with beautiful things; He wants those who can discern truth to have every opportunity to travel and observe; He wants those who can appreciate dress to be beautifully clothed, and those who can appreciate good food to be luxuriously fed.

God wants musicians to have instruments, lovers of beauty to be surrounded by it, seekers of truth to travel and learn, and everyone to be well dressed and well fed.

SENTENCE 38

He wants all these things because it is Himself that enjoys and appreciates them; it is God who wants to play, and sing, and enjoy beauty, and proclaim truth and wear fine clothes, and eat good foods.

God wants all this because it is God who enjoys it through you. Good food, fine clothes, beauty, music, truth, God savours them in your experience.

SENTENCE 39

'It is God that worketh in you to will and to do,' said Paul.

'It is God that worketh in you to will and to do,' said Paul. Your good desires start from that source.

SENTENCE 40

The desire you feel for riches is the infinite, seeking to express Himself in you as He sought to find expression in the little boy at the piano.

Your desire for wealth is the infinite trying to express itself through you, exactly like the unplayed music in that little boy.

Why wanting is not greed

The boy at the piano felt music he could not yet play. Wattles says your hunger for a fuller life is exactly that: something real pressing to come through you. Wanting more, when you will use it to live well and lift others, is not greed. It is life asking for a bigger instrument.

Drop the shame of wanting

SENTENCE 41

So you need not hesitate to ask largely.

So never hold back. Ask largely.

SENTENCE 42

Your part is to focalize and express the desire to God.

Your job is simple: focus the desire clearly and offer it, with faith, to God.

SENTENCE 43

This is a difficult point with most people; they retain something of the old idea that poverty and self-sacrifice are pleasing to God.

Most people stumble here. They still half believe that poverty and self-sacrifice please God.

SENTENCE 44

They look upon poverty as a part of the plan, a necessity of nature.

They treat poverty as part of God's plan, a law of nature. It is neither.

SENTENCE 45

They have the idea that God has finished His work, and made all that He can make, and that the majority of men must stay poor because there is not enough to go around.

They imagine God has finished creating, made all there is, and that most people must stay poor because there is not enough to go around.

SENTENCE 46

They hold to so much of this erroneous thought that they feel ashamed to ask for wealth; they try not to want more than a very modest competence, just enough to make them fairly comfortable.

This wrong idea runs so deep that they feel ashamed to ask for wealth, and force themselves to want no more than a bare, modest comfort.

EXAMPLE'I don't need much, just enough to get by.' That is self-imposed smallness, locking away your own potential.'

The man who asked too little

SENTENCE 47

I recall now the case of one student who was told that he must get in mind a clear picture of the things he desired, so that the creative thought of them might be impressed on Formless Substance.

Here is a true case. A student was told to hold a clear picture of what he wanted, so the creative thought could press on the formless substance.

SENTENCE 48

He was a very poor man, living in a rented house, and having only what he earned from day to day; and he could not grasp the fact that all wealth was his.

He was very poor, in a rented house, living day to day. He could not yet grasp that all wealth was already his.

SENTENCE 49

So, after thinking the matter over, he decided that he might reasonably ask for a new rug for the floor of his best room, and an anthracite coal stove to heat the house during the cold weather.

After much thought, he dared ask for only two small things: a new rug for his best room, and a coal stove to warm the house in winter.

SENTENCE 50

Following the instructions given in this book, he obtained these things in a few months; and then it dawned upon him that he had not asked enough.

Following this book, he got both within months. Then it hit him: he had asked for far too little.

SENTENCE 51

He went through the house in which he lived, and planned all the improvements he would like to make in it; he mentally added a bay window here and a room there, until it was complete in his mind as his ideal home; and then he planned its furnishings.

So he walked through his house and redesigned it in his mind, a bay window here, a room there, until it was his ideal home, down to the furniture.

SENTENCE 52

Holding the whole picture in his mind, he began living in the Certain Way, and moving toward what he wanted; and he owns the house now, and is rebuilding it after the form of his mental image.

Holding that whole picture, he lived in the Certain Way and moved toward it. He now owns the house and is rebuilding it to match the image in his mind.

SENTENCE 53

And now, with still larger faith, he is going on to get greater things.

And now, with even larger faith, he is moving on to greater things.

SENTENCE 54

It has been unto him according to his faith, and it is so with you and with all of us.

It was done to him according to his faith. And it is the same for you, and for every one of us.

EXAMPLETake a spoon to the ocean and you get a spoonful. Take a large vessel and it fills. The ocean is endless; your faith is the size of the vessel.
Where this is going

The student got his rug and his stove, then saw he had asked far too little, and built the whole house instead. That is the lesson of Chapter 6: it is done to you according to your faith, so widen it. Chapter 7 turns to the force that keeps your faith connected to the source while you wait. That is the chapter on gratitude.
