Young Maker's Science of Getting Rich · Chapter 5

Increasing Life.

The universe is alive, and everything alive wants to grow. Your wish for more money is that same growth pushing through you. So God wants you rich, on one condition: want real life for everyone, and create instead of compete. Seventy sentences, explained in English and Malayalam.

The field keeps making more. So does life.
The whole chapter in one chain

Why more is holy

Chapter 5 answers a quiet worry: is wanting more a sin? Follow the chain and the answer is a clear no.

Life wants to grow. The universe is alive, and growth is its nature. Your desire is that growth pushing to come out through you. So God wants you rich, because more life flows through a person with means. One condition: want real life for all, not just pleasure. And create, do not compete, because the supply is endless and there is no one to take from.

SENTENCE 01

You must get rid of the last vestige of the old idea that there is a Deity whose will it is that you should be poor, or whose purposes may be served by keeping you in poverty.

Throw out the old belief that God wants you poor, or that your poverty somehow serves a holy purpose. Not a trace of it should stay.

EXAMPLEA father who thinks being poor is holy teaches his children to accept hardship as fate. Wattles says drop that. Divine progress needs abundance, not hunger."
SENTENCE 02

The Intelligent Substance which is All, and in All, and which lives in All and lives in you, is a consciously Living Substance.

The substance that is everything, inside everything, and inside you, is not dead matter. It is alive and aware.

SENTENCE 03

Being a consciously living substance, It must have the nature and inherent desire of every living intelligence for increase of life.

Because it is alive, it carries the same urge every living thing has: to grow, to expand, to be more.

SENTENCE 04

Every living thing must continually seek for the enlargement of its life, because life, in the mere act of living, must increase itself.

Standing still goes against life itself. The very act of living pushes everything alive to reach for more.

SENTENCE 05

A seed, dropped into the ground, springs into activity, and in the act of living produces a hundred more seeds; life, by living, multiplies itself.

A seed in the soil does not sit still. It sprouts and gives back a hundred seeds. Life multiplies just by living.

EXAMPLEPut one grain of rice in the soil and it comes back as a head of grain with hundreds. That is nature multiplying itself.
SENTENCE 06

It is forever Becoming More; it must do so, if it continues to be at all.

It is always becoming more. It has to, just to keep existing. Stop growing and decay begins.

What to notice

Chapter 5 is called the Increase of Life. Before Wattles gives you the rules of action, he plants one belief: the universe is a living thing that wants to grow, and your wish for more is that same growth working through you. Keep this in mind and nothing in the chapter sounds greedy.

Intelligence is under this same necessity for continuous increase.

SENTENCE 08

Every thought we think makes it necessary for us to think another thought; consciousness is continually expanding.

Every thought leads to the next. One idea opens the door to another. The mind keeps widening.

EXAMPLEThe thought that invented the wheel did not stop. It led to carts, then engines, then planes, then spacecraft. Each idea opened the next door.
SENTENCE 09

Every fact we learn leads us to the learning of another fact; knowledge is continually increasing.

Learn one thing and it raises new questions. Knowledge never stops growing.

SENTENCE 10

Every talent we cultivate brings to the mind the desire to cultivate another talent; we are subject to the urge of life, seeking expression, which ever drives us on to know more, to do more, and to be more.

Build one skill and you want the next. That pull to know more, do more, be more, is life itself pushing through you. Not greed.

EXAMPLELearn one language and you want the next. Learn one instrument and your hand reaches for another. That is the natural pull in a human being.
SENTENCE 11

In order to know more, do more, and be more we must have more; we must have things to use, for we learn, and do, and become, only by using things.

You cannot grow in a vacuum. To know more and do more you need things to use. We learn and become only by using things.

EXAMPLEA scientist needs a lab and instruments to discover. A musician needs a piano or a violin. Without tools, talent cannot come out.
SENTENCE 12

We must get rich, so that we can live more.

That is why we must get rich: to live more. Not for show. For a fuller life.

SENTENCE 13

The desire for riches is simply the capacity for larger life seeking fulfillment; every desire is the effort of an unexpressed possibility to come into action.

The wish for money is really your bigger life trying to happen. Every desire is some locked potential trying to come out.

SENTENCE 14

It is power seeking to manifest which causes desire.

Ambition is not evil. It is power inside you pressing to come out and take form.

SENTENCE 15

That which makes you want more money is the same as that which makes the plant grow; it is Life, seeking fuller expression.

The same force that wants you to earn more is the force that makes a plant grow. It is Life, reaching for fuller expression.

SENTENCE 26

You must want real life, not mere pleasure of sensual gratification.

Want the full life, mind, body and spirit, not just a chase after cheap pleasure.

SENTENCE 27

Life is the performance of function; and the individual really lives only when he performs every function, physical, mental, and spiritual, of which he is capable, without excess in any.

Living means using your faculties. You truly live only when body, mind and spirit all work, and none of them is taken to excess.

SENTENCE 28

You do not want to get rich in order to live swinishly, for the gratification of animal desires; that is not life.

Getting rich only to overeat and indulge like an animal pulls you down. That is not life.

SENTENCE 29

But the performance of every physical function is a part of life, and no one lives completely who denies the impulses of the body a normal and healthful expression.

The opposite error is just as wrong. The body's natural needs are part of life. Starving them is not holiness.

SENTENCE 30

You do not want to get rich solely to enjoy mental pleasures, to get knowledge, to gratify ambition, to outshine others, to be famous.

Do not chase riches only to feed your ego, beat rivals or become famous.

SENTENCE 31

All these are a legitimate part of life, but the man who lives for the pleasures of the intellect alone will only have a partial life, and he will never be satisfied with his lot.

These things are fine in their place. But living only in the mind leaves the rest of you starved, and you will never feel satisfied.

SENTENCE 32

You do not want to get rich solely for the good of others, to lose yourself for the salvation of mankind, to experience the joys of philanthropy and sacrifice.

The martyr error too. Do not seek money only to sacrifice yourself for everyone else while ignoring your own life.

SENTENCE 33

The joys of the soul are only a part of life; and they are no better or nobler than any other part.

The soul's joys are one part of life, not a higher part. Not above the body or the mind.

SENTENCE 34

You want to get rich in order that you may eat, drink, and be merry when it is time to do these things; in order that you may surround yourself with beautiful things, see distant lands, feed your mind, and develop your intellect; in order that you may love men and do kind things, and be able to play a good part in helping the world to find truth.

Here is the real why. Get rich so you can enjoy good food in its time, keep beauty around you, travel, grow your mind, love people, do kind things, and help the world find truth.

EXAMPLEGive your family a good life, travel and gain knowledge, and help people in need along the way. A balanced life, not a one-sided one.
SENTENCE 35

But remember that extreme altruism is no better and no nobler than extreme selfishness; both are mistakes.

Remember: sacrificing yourself completely for others is just as much a mistake as cold selfishness. Both are off balance.

SENTENCE 36

Get rid of the idea that God wants you to sacrifice yourself for others, and that you can secure his favor by doing so; God requires nothing of the kind.

Drop the belief that punishing yourself for others wins God's favour. God asks for no such thing.

SENTENCE 37

What he wants is that you should make the most of yourself, for yourself, and for others; and you can help others more by making the most of yourself than in any other way.

What God wants is for you to become your best, for yourself and for others. You help others most by becoming your fullest self.

EXAMPLELike the airline rule: put on your own oxygen mask before helping others. You can support people only after you are strong yourself.
SENTENCE 38

You can make the most of yourself only by getting rich; so it is right and praiseworthy that you should give your first and best thought to the work of acquiring wealth.

You reach your full potential only with resources. So giving your first and best effort to building wealth is right and worthy.

The balance to hold

Wattles rules out three dead ends at once: living for the body alone, living for the mind alone, living for others alone. Each one starves the rest of you. Real life uses body, mind and soul together, and your own growth is what lets you lift everyone else.

You do not have to cheat, or to take advantage.

No cheating. No taking advantage of anyone's weakness.

SENTENCE 46

You do not need to let any man work for you for less than he earns.

You do not need to underpay anyone. Pay people what their work is really worth.

SENTENCE 47

You do not have to covet the property of others, or to look at it with wishful eyes; no man has anything of which you cannot have the like, and that without taking what he has away from him.

No need to envy what others own. There is nothing anyone has that you cannot have the like of, without taking theirs.

SENTENCE 48

You are to become a creator, not a competitor; you are going to get what you want, but in such a way that when you get it every other man will have more than he has now.

Become a creator, not a competitor. You will get what you want, and in a way that leaves everyone around you with more than before.

EXAMPLEWhen Henry Ford made cars cheaply, he became rich, and at the same time lakhs of workers got good wages and ordinary people could own a car.
The heart of the chapter

This is the line that separates the Science of Getting Rich from every hustle you have seen. You do not take from anyone. You do not cheat, underpay or envy. You create new value, and you win in a way that leaves everyone around you richer than before. Memorise this one.

Then why do ruthless people get rich?

SENTENCE 49

I am aware that there are men who get a vast amount of money by proceeding in direct opposition to the statements in the paragraph above, and may add a word of explanation here.

Wattles knows the obvious objection: plenty of ruthless people pile up money by doing the exact opposite. He will explain.

SENTENCE 50

Men of the plutocratic type, who become very rich, do so sometimes purely by their extraordinary ability on the plane of competition; and sometimes they unconsciously relate themselves to Substance in its great purposes and movements for the general racial upbuilding through industrial evolution.

The big tycoons get rich partly through raw competitive skill, and partly because, without knowing it, they fit the substance's big plan of building industry for everyone.

SENTENCE 51

Rockefeller, Carnegie, Morgan, et al., have been the unconscious agents of the Supreme in the necessary work of systematizing and organizing productive industry; and in the end, their work will contribute immensely toward increased life for all.

Rockefeller, Carnegie, Morgan and the rest were, without realising it, tools of a larger power, organising industry. In the end their work adds to life for everyone.

SENTENCE 52

Their day is nearly over; they have organized production, and will soon be succeeded by the agents of the multitude, who will organize the machinery of distribution.

Their time is almost up. They organised production. Next will come the people's representatives, who organise fair distribution.

SENTENCE 53

The multi-millionaires are like the monster reptiles of the prehistoric eras; they play a necessary part in the evolutionary process, but the same Power which produced them will dispose of them.

The super-rich are like the giant dinosaurs of old: needed for one rough stage, but the same power that made them will clear them away.

SENTENCE 54

And it is well to bear in mind that they have never been really rich; a record of the private lives of most of this class will show that they have really been the most abject and wretched of the poor.

And remember, they were never truly rich. Look at their private lives and most were anxious, fearful, lonely. The poorest of the poor inside.

SENTENCE 55

Riches secured on the competitive plane are never satisfactory and permanent; they are yours to-day, and another's tomorrow.

Money won by competition never feels safe or lasting. Yours today, someone else's tomorrow.

EXAMPLEThe trader who slashes prices to crush others gets crushed tomorrow by a bigger company that cuts prices even more.
SENTENCE 56

Remember, if you are to become rich in a scientific and certain way, you must rise entirely out of the competitive thought.

To get rich the sure, scientific way, you have to rise completely out of competitive thinking. Not halfway.

SENTENCE 57

You must never think for a moment that the supply is limited.

Never, not for one moment, think the supply is running out.

SENTENCE 58

Just as soon as you begin to think that all the money is being 'cornered' and controlled by bankers and others, and that you must exert yourself to get laws passed to stop this process, and so on; in that moment you drop into the competitive mind, and your power to cause creation is gone for the time being; and what is worse, you will probably arrest the creative movements you have already instituted.

The moment you start thinking bankers have cornered all the money and you must fight to stop them, you have dropped back into competition. Your power to create switches off, and worse, you freeze the creation you had already started.

SENTENCE 59

Know that there are countless millions of dollars' worth of gold in the mountains of the earth, not yet brought to light; and know that if there were not, more would be created from Thinking Substance to supply your needs.

Know that huge stores of gold still lie undiscovered in the earth. And even if they did not, more would be made from the thinking substance to meet your need.

SENTENCE 60

Know that the money you need will come, even if it is necessary for a thousand men to be led to the discovery of new gold mines to-morrow.

Trust that the money you need will come, even if it takes a thousand people finding new gold mines tomorrow to deliver it.

SENTENCE 61

Never look at the visible supply; look always at the limitless riches in Formless Substance, and know that they are coming to you as fast as you can receive and use them.

Do not stare at the visible, limited supply. Keep your eyes on the limitless riches in the formless substance, coming to you as fast as you can receive and use them.

SENTENCE 62

Nobody, by cornering the visible supply, can prevent you from getting what is yours.

No one can hoard the visible supply and block what is yours. Your supply comes from the limitless source.

SENTENCE 63

So never allow yourself to think for an instant that all the best building spots will be taken before you get ready to build your house, unless you hurry.

Drop the fear of missing out. Never think the best spots will be gone before you are ready, unless you rush.

EXAMPLE"Everyone has already started this business, there is no chance left for me." No need to fear that. The universe arranges your path."
SENTENCE 64

Never worry about the trusts and combines, and get anxious for fear they will soon come to own the whole earth.

Do not lose sleep over big corporations and monopolies taking over the earth. Their power cannot cancel the law.

SENTENCE 65

Never get afraid that you will lose what you want because some other person 'beats you to it.'

Never fear that someone will reach it first and take what you want.

SENTENCE 66

That cannot possibly happen; you are not seeking any thing that is possessed by anybody else; you are causing what you want to be created from formless Substance, and the supply is without limits.

It cannot happen. You are not after something someone else already owns. You are causing it to be created fresh from the formless substance, and that supply has no limit.

SENTENCE 67

Stick to the formulated statement:

When the mind wavers, go straight back to the three lines.

SENTENCE 68

There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made, and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe.

Line one. A thinking substance makes everything and fills every gap in the universe.

SENTENCE 69

A thought, in this substance, produces the thing that is imaged by the thought.

Line two. A thought in that substance produces the thing the thought pictures.

SENTENCE 70

Man can form things in his thought, and, by impressing his thought upon formless substance, can cause the thing he thinks about to be created.

Line three. You can form a thing in thought, impress it on the substance, and cause it to be created.

Where this is going

Chapter 4 gave you the three lines. Chapter 5 tells you how to feel toward the world while you hold them: not afraid, not competing, not grabbing, but creating from an endless supply. Chapter 6 turns to the next question: how do you get what you want to the substance? That is the chapter on gratitude.
