Chapters 1 to 3 cleared the ground. Chapter 4 lays the foundation: thought is the only power that turns the formless substance into real things, and you are a thinking center who can use it. Sixty-six sentences, three foundations, one creed, explained in English and Malayalam.
Everything in this chapter sits on one chain. Learn the chain and the sixty-six sentences fall into place.
The substance thinks. It takes the shape of its thought. Every form in nature is one of its thoughts made visible. You are a thinking center. You can start original thoughts. Impress your thought on the substance and it moves, through people, trade and time, to produce the thing. Believe this fully, then do the hardest work in the world: think the truth no matter what you see.
Thought is the only power which can produce tangible riches from the Formless Substance.
Only one thing can turn the formless substance into real money, property and assets: thought. No thought, no form.
The stuff from which all things are made is a substance which thinks, and a thought of form in this substance produces the form.
The raw material of everything is not dead dust. It thinks. When a picture of a form is held in it, it starts producing that exact form.
Original Substance moves according to its thoughts; every form and process you see in nature is the visible expression of a thought in Original Substance.
Every orbit, tree, river and season is a thought of the substance made visible.
As the Formless Stuff thinks of a form, it takes that form; as it thinks of a motion, it makes that motion.
It has no fixed shape of its own. So it becomes whatever shape it thinks, and moves however it thinks.
That is the way all things were created.
This is the law of creation. The idea always comes first. The physical thing comes after.
We live in a thought world, which is part of a thought universe.
Reality is not cold machinery. It is a thought world inside a thought universe, and it responds to thought.
The thought of a moving universe extended throughout Formless Substance, and the Thinking Stuff moving according to that thought, took the form of systems of planets, and maintains that form.
The thought of a moving universe spread through the substance. The substance moved with that thought and became planets and stars, and still holds that shape.
Thinking Substance takes the form of its thought, and moves according to the thought.
Mind leads, matter follows. The substance copies the shape of its thought and moves the way the thought moves.
Holding the idea of a circling system of suns and worlds, it takes the form of these bodies, and moves them as it thinks.
It holds the idea of circling suns and worlds, so it becomes those bodies and moves them as it thinks.
Thinking the form of a slow-growing oak tree, it moves accordingly, and produces the tree, though centuries may be required to do the work.
When the substance thinks of an oak, it produces the oak. But it takes the oak's own time, even centuries. The thought is instant. The growth is not.
In creating, the Formless seems to move according to the lines of motion it has established; the thought of an oak tree does not cause the instant formation of a full-grown tree, but it does start in motion the forces which will produce the tree, along established lines of growth.
Creation is not a magic trick. The thought of an oak does not drop a full tree from the sky. It sets the forces in motion that grow one, along the paths nature already uses.
Every thought of form, held in thinking Substance, causes the creation of the form, but always, or at least generally, along lines of growth and action already established.
A held thought always produces its form. But it uses the roads that already exist: biology, trade, people, time.
The thought of a house of a certain construction, if it were impressed upon Formless Substance, might not cause the instant formation of the house; but it would cause the turning of creative energies already working in trade and commerce into such channels as to result in the speedy building of the house.
Impress a clear picture of a house on the substance and it does not appear out of thin air. Instead, builders, materials, money and deals start moving toward you, and the house gets built fast.
And if there were no existing channels through which the creative energy could work, then the house would be formed directly from primal substance, without waiting for the slow processes of the organic and inorganic world.
The creative power is not limited to existing channels. It prefers them. But if none existed, it could form the thing directly.
No thought of form can be impressed upon Original Substance without causing the creation of the form.
Cause and effect, with no exceptions. A clear picture truly impressed on the substance must become a thing.
This is where many readers of "law of attraction" books go wrong. Wattles never promises instant results. The thought starts forces moving along existing channels: people, trade, time. The house still gets built by builders. The thought is why the builders show up.
Man is a thinking center, and can originate thought.
You are not just a consumer of reality. You are a thinking center. You can start a brand new thought that never existed before.
All the forms that man fashions with his hands must first exist in his thought; he cannot shape a thing until he has thought that thing.
Every tool, building and invention existed as a thought before it existed as a thing. Hands follow mind.
And so far man has confined his efforts wholly to the work of his hands; he has applied manual labor to the world of forms, seeking to change or modify those already existing.
Until now, people have only worked with their hands: cutting, hammering, rearranging what already exists. The lowest level of creation.
He has never thought of trying to cause the creation of new forms by impressing his thoughts upon Formless Substance.
Most people never realise they can send a clear intention straight to the source and draw new forms from it.
When man has a thought-form, he takes material from the forms of nature, and makes an image of the form which is in his mind.
The usual human way: take wood and make a chair, take clay and make a brick. Reshaping, not creating.
He has, so far, made little or no effort to co-operate with Formless Intelligence; to work 'with the Father.'
Humanity has barely tried to partner with the intelligence behind everything. Wattles calls that intelligence "the Father", the biblical word.
He has not dreamed that he can 'do what he seeth the Father doing.'
People have not even imagined that they can create the way the universe itself creates.
Man reshapes and modifies existing forms by manual labor; he has given no attention to the question whether he may not produce things from Formless Substance by communicating his thoughts to it.
People push things around with muscle and never ask whether they could produce things by thinking clearly and communicating that to the substance.
We propose to prove that he may do so; to prove that any man or woman may do so, and to show how.
Wattles states his promise: this creative method works for any person, and he will show the exact steps.
As our first step, we must lay down three fundamental propositions.
Before the method, three foundations. Everything else stands on them.
First, we assert that there is one original formless stuff, or substance, from which all things are made.
Foundation one: one formless substance is the source of everything.
All the seemingly many elements are but different presentations of one element; all the many forms found in organic and inorganic nature are but different shapes, made from the same stuff.
Variety is on the surface. Trees, rocks, oceans and bodies are one element wearing different shapes.
And this stuff is thinking stuff; a thought held in it produces the form of the thought.
Foundation two: that substance thinks, and a held thought becomes a form.
Thought, in thinking substance, produces shapes.
Thought in the substance makes shapes. Four words that carry the chapter.
Man is a thinking center, capable of original thought; if man can communicate his thought to original thinking substance, he can cause the creation, or formation, of the thing he thinks about.
Foundation three: you can think original thoughts, and if you can pass them to the substance, the substance builds what you thought.
To summarize this:
Now the three lines Wattles wants you to carry for life.
There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made, and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe.
Line one. A thinking substance makes everything and fills every gap in the universe.
A thought, in this substance, Produces the thing that is imaged by the thought.
Line two. A thought in that substance produces the thing the thought pictures.
Man can form things in his thought, and, by impressing his thought upon formless substance, can cause the thing he thinks about to be created.
Line three. You can form a thing in thought, impress it on the substance, and cause it to be created.
It may be asked if I can prove these statements; and without going into details, I answer that I can do so, both by logic and experience.
Can he prove it? Yes, he says, two ways: by reasoning and by experience.
Reasoning back from the phenomena of form and thought, I come to one original thinking substance; and reasoning forward from this thinking substance, I come to man's power to cause the formation of the thing he thinks about.
Trace things backward and you reach one thinking source. Reason forward from that source and you reach human creative power.
And by experiment, I find the reasoning true; and this is my strongest proof.
He tested it. It worked. That, he says, is the strongest proof.
If one man who reads this book gets rich by doing what it tells him to do, that is evidence in support of my claim; but if every man who does what it tells him to do gets rich, that is positive proof until some one goes through the process and fails.
One reader getting rich is evidence. Every reader who follows the steps getting rich is proof, until someone does it exactly and fails.
The theory is true until the process fails; and this process will not fail, for every man who does exactly what this book tells him to do will get rich.
The theory stands until the process fails, and it will not fail for anyone who does exactly what the book says.
Press and hold the button. While you hold, the truth is clear and the appearances fade. Let go, and the appearances flood back. That is Sentences 44 to 48 in your hand: thinking truth takes effort, and the effort has to be sustained.
I have said that men get rich by doing things in a Certain Way; and in order to do so, men must become able to think in a certain way.
The Certain Way of doing starts with a certain way of thinking. You cannot act right while thinking wrong.
A man's way of doing things is the direct result of the way he thinks about things.
How you act is the direct result of how you think. Always.
To do things in a way you want to do them, you will have to acquire the ability to think the way you want to think; this is the first step toward getting rich.
To act as you choose, you must first learn to think as you choose. That is step one.
To think what you want to think is to think truth, regardless of appearances.
Thinking what you want to think means thinking the truth, no matter how things look right now.
Every man has the natural and inherent power to think what he wants to think, but it requires far more effort to do so than it does to think the thoughts which are suggested by appearances.
You can choose your thoughts. But reacting to what you see is easy, and choosing takes far more effort.
To think according to appearance is easy; to think truth regardless of appearances is laborious, and requires the expenditure of more power than any other work man is called upon to perform.
Absorbing bad news takes no effort. Holding your vision against bad news is the hardest labour a human does.
There is no labor from which most people shrink as they do from that of sustained and consecutive thought; it is the hardest work in the world.
People run from sustained, disciplined thinking more than from any other work. It is the hardest work there is.
This is especially true when truth is contrary to appearances.
It is hardest when what you see directly contradicts what you are holding.
Every appearance in the visible world tends to produce a corresponding form in the mind which observes it; and this can only be prevented by holding the thought of the truth.
What you keep looking at imprints itself on your mind. The only defence is holding the truth deliberately.
To look upon the appearance of disease will produce the form of disease in your own mind, and ultimately in your body, unless you hold the thought of the truth, which is that there is no disease; it is only an appearance, and the reality is health.
Stare at symptoms and sickness takes root in the mind, then the body. Hold the thought that health is the reality and disease the appearance.
To look upon the appearances of poverty will produce corresponding forms in your own mind, unless you hold to the truth that there is no poverty; there is only abundance.
Stare at lack and your mind becomes lack. Hold the truth: there is only abundance.
To think health when surrounded by the appearances of disease, or to think riches when in the midst of appearances of poverty, requires power; but he who acquires this power becomes a master mind.
Thinking health among sickness, thinking riches among poverty, takes real power. Whoever builds that power becomes a master mind.
He can conquer fate; he can have what he wants.
Such a person is not ruled by luck or circumstance. They can have what they want.
Appearance = what your senses show you right now: the empty account, the symptom, the rejection. Truth = what is behind it: one thinking substance, endless supply, your power to impress a thought. Thinking truth while appearances scream is the work. It is the hardest work. It is also the whole method.
Wattles asks you to read these over and over, fix every word in memory, and sit with them until belief is solid. Sentence 61. Here they are, large, in both languages.
There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made, and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe.
A thought, in this substance, produces the thing that is imaged by the thought.
Man can form things in his thought, and, by impressing his thought upon formless substance, can cause the thing he thinks about to be created.
This power can only be acquired by getting hold of the basic fact which is behind all appearances; and that fact is that there is one Thinking Substance, from which and by which all things are made.
That power comes from one fact held firmly: behind every appearance is one Thinking Substance that makes everything.
Then we must grasp the truth that every thought held in this substance becomes a form, and that man can so impress his thoughts upon it as to cause them to take form and become visible things.
Then grasp the second truth: every held thought becomes a form, and you can impress your thoughts so they become visible things.
When we realize this, we lose all doubt and fear, for we know that we can create what we want to create; we can get what we want to have, and can become what we want to be.
Once you really get this, doubt and fear leave. You know you can create, have and become what you choose.
As a first step toward getting rich, you must believe the three fundamental statements given previously in this chapter; and in order to emphasize them, I repeat them here:
Step one toward wealth: believe the three statements. He repeats them so you cannot miss them.
There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made, and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe.
Creed, line one.
A thought, in this substance, Produces the thing that is imaged by the thought.
Creed, line two.
Man can form things in his thought, and, by impressing his thought upon formless substance, can cause the thing he thinks about to be created.
Creed, line three.
You must lay aside all other concepts of the universe than this monistic one; and you must dwell upon this until it is fixed in your mind, and has become your habitual thought.
Set aside every other picture of the universe. Live with this one, all is one, until it becomes your default way of thinking.
Read these creed statements over and over again; fix every word upon your memory, and meditate upon them until you firmly believe what they say.
Read the three lines again and again. Memorise every word. Sit with them until belief is solid.
If a doubt comes to you, cast it aside as a sin.
When doubt shows up, throw it out at once. Treat it as poison to the work.
Do not listen to arguments against this idea; do not go to churches or lectures where a contrary concept of things is taught or preached.
Guard your mind. Stay away from talks and arguments that teach scarcity, even religious ones, while you are building this faith.
Do not read magazines or books which teach a different idea; if you get mixed up in your faith, all your efforts will be in vain.
Do not mix philosophies. A divided faith breaks the process and wastes the work.
Do not ask why these things are true, nor speculate as to how they can be true; simply take them on trust.
Stop debating the metaphysics. Take the three lines on trust and test them by action.
The science of getting rich begins with the absolute acceptance of this faith.
The whole science starts here, with full acceptance. Not partial. Absolute.
Chapter 4 is the hinge of the book. Before it, Wattles argued. From here, he instructs. Chapter 5 begins with the first instruction: increase of life, and the refusal to compete. Everything that follows assumes you have accepted these three lines.
If you can say these seven lines from memory, you have Chapter 4.
