Chapter 3 answers the two biggest objections to Chapters 1 and 2: "the rich have taken all the opportunity" and "there is not enough to go around". Wattles says no to both, then shows where opportunity actually flows. All forty-three sentences are here, explained in English and Malayalam.
Chapter 2 said wealth comes from a Certain Way. The natural reply is "but the rich have fenced off every chance" or "there is simply not enough". Chapter 3 takes those two apart.
Opportunity is not fenced. Monopolies own the old field, and the tide has already moved to a new one. Serve the new wave and you are in the open. Supply is not short. The visible supply is practically endless and the invisible supply is truly endless, because everything is made from one living substance that keeps producing more. So if you are poor, it is not the rich and it is not nature. It is the Way.
No man is kept poor because opportunity has been taken away from him; because other people have monopolized the wealth, and have put a fence around it.
Nobody is poor because someone else locked up all the money and built a fence around it. Opportunity has not been hoarded by the rich.
You may be shut off from engaging in business in certain lines, but there are other channels open to you.
Some crowded industries may be closed to you. Other channels are always open.
Probably it would be hard for you to get control of any of the great railroad systems; that field is pretty well monopolized.
In 1910 the railways were owned by a few tycoons. Wattles admits it: an ordinary person was not going to take that field.
But the electric railway business is still in its infancy, and offers plenty of scope for enterprise; and it will be but a very few years until traffic and transportation through the air will become a great industry, and in all its branches will give employment to hundreds of thousands, and perhaps to millions, of people.
Instead of fighting the giants in an old industry, look at the new one. In 1910 that meant electric railways and flying. Wattles predicted aviation would employ millions. He was right.
Why not turn your attention to the development of aerial transportation, instead of competing with J.J. Hill and others for a chance in the steam railway world?
Why spend your energy fighting J.J. Hill, the railway king of the day, in a sunset market? Point that energy at the frontier instead.
It is quite true that if you are a workman in the employ of the steel trust you have very little chance of becoming the owner of the plant in which you work; but it is also true that if you will commence to act in a Certain Way, you can soon leave the employ of the steel trust; you can buy a farm of from ten to forty acres, and engage in business as a producer of foodstuffs.
A steel worker will probably never own the steel plant. True. But if he starts acting in the Certain Way, he can leave, buy ten to forty acres, and become a producer in his own right.
There is great opportunity at this time for men who will live upon small tracts of land and cultivate the same intensively; such men will certainly get rich.
In his time, farming a small plot intensively was an uncrowded road to wealth. Note the word intensively: smart, not just hard.
You may say that it is impossible for you to get the land, but I am going to prove to you that it is not impossible, and that you can certainly get a farm if you will go to work in a Certain Way.
"I cannot afford the land." Wattles hears the objection and promises to prove it wrong: work in the Certain Way and the land comes.
Wattles does not deny that monopolies exist. He says they only own the old field. Every monopoly is a sign that the tide has already moved somewhere else.
Tap an era. See where opportunity was flowing, who got rich by serving that flow, and who got stuck swimming against it. Sentences 9 to 12.
At different periods the tide of opportunity sets in different directions, according to the needs of the whole, and the particular stage of social evolution which has been reached.
Opportunity moves like a tide. In each era it flows toward whatever society needs most at that stage.
At present, in America, it is setting toward agriculture and the allied industries and professions.
In early 1900s America the tide was flowing toward farming and everything that supplied it.
To-day, opportunity is open before the factory worker in his line. It is open before the business man who supplies the farmer more than before the one who supplies the factory worker; and before the professional man who waits upon the farmer more than before the one who serves the working class.
When a wave rises, the biggest wins go to the people who serve the wave: the merchant and the professional who supply the rising group.
There is abundance of opportunity for the man who will go with the tide, instead of trying to swim against it.
Go with the tide and you get momentum for free. Swim against it and you exhaust yourself for nothing.
So the factory workers, either as individuals or as a class, are not deprived of opportunity.
So the working class, as individuals and as a group, is not locked out of opportunity.
The workers are not being 'kept down' by their masters; they are not being 'ground' by the trusts and combinations of capital.
Workers are not being crushed by their bosses or by big capital. Wattles refuses the victim story.
As a class, they are where they are because they do not do things in a Certain Way.
As a group, they stay where they are because they do not work in the Certain Way. Same cause as Chapter 2.
If the workers of America chose to do so, they could follow the example of their brothers in Belgium and other countries, and establish great department stores and co-operative industries; they could elect men of their own class to office, and pass laws favoring the development of such co-operative industries; and in a few years they could take peaceable possession of the industrial field.
If workers chose to, they could build cooperatives, elect their own people, pass helpful laws, and peacefully take over the industrial field within a few years. The door is open; the choice is theirs.
The working class may become the master class whenever they will begin to do things in a Certain Way; the law of wealth is the same for them as it is for all others.
The law of wealth does not check your class. The moment any group applies it, that group rises.
This they must learn; and they will remain where they are as long as they continue to do as they do.
They have to learn it. Keep doing what you have always done and you stay where you have always been.
The individual worker, however, is not held down by the ignorance or the mental slothfulness of his class; he can follow the tide of opportunity to riches, and this book will tell him how.
Even if the crowd around you is resigned or lazy in its thinking, you as one person can break out, follow the tide, and win. That is what the book is for.
These sentences are the ones people push back on. Wattles is not saying injustice does not exist. He is saying that waiting for the system to change is not a plan, and that the law of wealth works for anyone who applies it, starting now.
No one is kept in poverty by a shortness in the supply of riches; there is more than enough for all.
Nobody is poor because the world ran out of wealth. There is more than enough for everyone. Wealth is not a fixed pie.
A palace as large as the capitol at Washington might be built for every family on earth from the building material in the United States alone; and under intensive cultivation, this country would produce wool, cotton, linen, and silk enough to cloth each person in the world finer than Solomon was arrayed in all his glory; together with food enough to feed them all luxuriously.
Wattles goes big to make the point. One country's material could house every family on earth in a palace, dress everyone like a king, and feed them all well.
The visible supply is practically inexhaustible; and the invisible supply really is inexhaustible.
Two layers. The visible supply, raw materials you can see, is practically endless. The invisible supply behind it is truly endless.
Everything you see on earth is made from one original substance, out of which all things proceed.
Everything you can see is made from one original substance. Soil, metal, water, your body: different forms, one source.
New Forms are constantly being made, and older ones are dissolving; but all are shapes assumed by One Thing.
Forms come and go. Stars die, trees rot, buildings rise. The One Thing underneath never runs out.
There is no limit to the supply of Formless Stuff, or Original Substance.
The formless source has no edge and no limit.
The universe is made out of it; but it was not all used in making the universe.
Making the whole universe used only a fraction of it.
The spaces in, through, and between the forms of the visible universe are permeated and filled with the Original Substance; with the formless Stuff; with the raw material of all things.
What looks like empty space, around things and inside them, is full of this raw material.
Ten thousand times as much as has been made might still be made, and even then we should not have exhausted the supply of universal raw material.
Multiply everything ever made by ten thousand. The supply still would not run dry.
No man, therefore, is poor because nature is poor, or because there is not enough to go around.
So nobody is poor because nature is stingy. Nature is not stingy.
Nature is an inexhaustible storehouse of riches; the supply will never run short.
Nature is a warehouse that never empties. The shelves refill themselves.
Original Substance is alive with creative energy, and is constantly producing more forms.
The substance is not dead stock. It is alive and keeps producing new forms.
When the supply of building material is exhausted, more will be produced; when the soil is exhausted so that food stuffs will no longer grow upon it, it will be renewed or more soil will be made.
Use up one material and more gets made. Exhaust the soil and it is renewed, or new soil forms. Through nature and through human invention.
When all the gold and silver has been dug from the earth, if man is still in such a stage of social development that he needs gold and silver, more will produced from the Formless.
If all the gold were dug up and people still needed gold, more would be produced from the Formless. The supply bends to real need.
The Formless Stuff responds to the needs of man; it will not let him be without any good thing.
The Formless responds to human need. It will not leave humanity without any good thing.
This is true of man collectively; the race as a whole is always abundantly rich, and if individuals are poor, it is because they do not follow the Certain Way of doing things which makes the individual man rich.
Humanity as a whole is always rich. When an individual is poor, it is because that individual is not following the Certain Way.
The Formless Stuff is intelligent; it is stuff which thinks.
The Formless is not dumb matter. It is aware. It thinks. This is the Thinking Stuff from the three-names page.
It is alive, and is always impelled toward more life.
It is alive, and it always pushes toward more life.
It is the natural and inherent impulse of life to seek to live more; it is the nature of intelligence to enlarge itself, and of consciousness to find fuller expression.
Life wants to live more. Intelligence wants to grow. Consciousness wants fuller expression. That is the master law behind everything.
The universe of forms has been made by Formless Living Substance, throwing itself into form in order to express itself more fully.
The universe of things exists because the living substance threw itself into form to express itself more fully.
The universe is a great Living Presence, always moving inherently toward more life and fuller functioning.
The universe is a living presence, always moving toward more life and better functioning.
Nature is formed for the advancement of life; its impelling motive is the increase of life.
Nature is built to advance life. Its whole motive is more life, never less.
For this cause, everything which can possibly minister to life is bountifully provided; there can be no lack unless God is to contradict himself and nullify his own works.
Because nature exists for life, everything life needs is supplied in abundance. Real lack would mean God working against His own purpose.
You are not kept poor by lack in the supply of riches; it is a fact which I shall demonstrate a little farther on that even the resources of the Formless Supply are at the command of the man or woman will act and think in a Certain Way.
Supply is not what holds you back. Wattles promises to show that even the Formless supply answers to anyone who thinks and acts in the Certain Way.
Chapter 3 ends with a promise: the Formless supply answers to the Certain Way. Chapter 4 begins to say what that Way is. If you have read the three-names page, you already know the vocabulary: Original Substance, Formless Stuff, Thinking Stuff.
If you can say these seven lines from memory, you have Chapter 3.
