Wattles opens the book with one uncomfortable claim: you cannot live a full life without money. Then he spends thirty-five sentences showing why wanting wealth is natural, right and even a duty. All thirty-five are here, in English and Malayalam.
Read this chapter as a chain of reasoning. Each link depends on the one before it. If you accept the first, the last follows.
Life exists to develop. Every living thing has a right to grow as far as it can. Development needs things: food, books, travel, tools, beauty, the means to give. Things need money, because that is how society is organised. So getting rich is the base of all progress, and the desire for it is healthy, not greedy.
Whatever may be said in praise of poverty, the fact remains that it is not possible to live a really complete or successful life unless one is rich.
People praise poverty for moral or spiritual reasons. Wattles does not argue with them. He simply states the fact: a complete, successful life needs enough money.
No man can rise to his greatest possible height in talent or soul development unless he has plenty of money; for to unfold the soul and to develop talent he must have many things to use, and he cannot have these things unless he has money to buy them with.
Your talent and your spirit both need tools, resources and experiences to grow. Those things cost money. Without it, your growth stops early.
A man develops in mind, soul, and body by making use of things, and society is so organized that man must have money in order to become the possessor of things; therefore, the basis of all advancement for man must be the science of getting rich.
Mind, soul and body all grow by using things. Society is built so that things are bought with money. So learning how wealth works is the foundation under every other kind of progress.
Wattles is not attacking people who live simply. He is attacking the idea that settling is noble. A Young Maker can respect a monk and still refuse to be a beggar.
The object of all life is development; and everything that lives has an inalienable right to all the development it is capable of attaining.
Life exists to grow. Every living thing has a right that cannot be taken away: the right to reach its full capacity.
Man's right to life means his right to have the free and unrestricted use of all the things which may be necessary to his fullest mental, spiritual, and physical unfoldment; or, in other words, his right to be rich.
The right to live is not only the right to survive. It is the right to use freely everything you need to grow fully in mind, spirit and body. Wattles gives that its plain name: the right to be rich.
In this book, I shall not speak of riches in a figurative way; to be really rich does not mean to be satisfied or contented with a little.
He means money, not a poetic "rich in spirit". Being truly rich is not the same as being content with very little.
No man ought to be satisfied with a little if he is capable of using and enjoying more.
If you can use more and enjoy more, settling for less is holding yourself back.
The purpose of Nature is the advancement and unfoldment of life; and every man should have all that can contribute to the power, elegance, beauty, and richness of life; to be content with less is sinful.
Nature pushes life forward and outward. Everyone should have whatever adds power, elegance, beauty and richness to life. Choosing to stay small works against the law of life itself.
The man who owns all he wants for the living of all the life he is capable of living is rich; and no man who has not plenty of money can have all he wants.
Here is his definition. Rich means owning everything you need to live at your full capacity. Nobody reaches that without plenty of money.
Life has advanced so far, and become so complex, that even the most ordinary man or woman requires a great amount of wealth in order to live in a manner that even approaches completeness.
Modern life is complicated and demanding. Even an ordinary, balanced life now needs a large amount of resources. In 1910 that was true. In 2026 it is more true.
Rich = owning all you need to live the fullest life you are capable of. Not "comfortable". Not "enough to get by". The full life.
Every person naturally wants to become all that they are capable of becoming; this desire to realize innate possibilities is inherent in human nature; we cannot help wanting to be all that we can be.
Wanting to become your best is not something you learned. It is built into you. You cannot switch it off.
Success in life is becoming what you want to be; you can become what you want to be only by making use of things, and you can have the free use of things only as you become rich enough to buy them.
Success means becoming who you want to be. That takes things. Free use of things takes money.
To understand the science of getting rich is therefore the most essential of all knowledge.
Because money controls your access to growth, understanding how wealth works is the most important thing you can study.
There is nothing wrong in wanting to get rich.
Wanting money is not a moral flaw. Say it plainly and drop the guilt.
The desire for riches is really the desire for a richer, fuller, and more abundant life; and that desire is praise worthy.
Underneath the wish for money is the wish for a bigger, fuller life. That wish deserves respect, not shame.
The man who does not desire to live more abundantly is abnormal, and so the man who does not desire to have money enough to buy all he wants is abnormal.
Someone with no wish to grow, and no wish for the money to fund that growth, is going against a basic human instinct.
Tap any of the three. Wattles says no one of them can live fully if another is cut short. The diagram shows what that looks like.
There are three motives for which we live; we live for the body, we live for the mind, we live for the soul.
Human life runs on three tracks at once: the physical, the mental and the spiritual.
No one of these is better or holier than the other; all are alike desirable, and no one of the three, body, mind, or soul, can live fully if either of the others is cut short of full life and expression.
None of the three ranks above the others. Starve the body for the soul, or ignore the mind, and the whole life is incomplete.
It is not right or noble to live only for the soul and deny mind or body; and it is wrong to live for the intellect and deny body or soul.
Living only for the soul while neglecting mind and body is not noble. Living only for the intellect is just as wrong.
We are all acquainted with the loathsome consequences of living for the body and denying both mind and soul; and we see that real life means the complete expression of all that man can give forth through body, mind, and soul.
We have all seen what happens when someone lives only for pleasure. Real life is the full expression of body, mind and soul together.
Whatever he can say, no man can be really happy or satisfied unless his body is living fully in every function, and unless the same is true of his mind and his soul.
Real happiness is impossible while any part of you, body, mind or soul, is held back.
Wherever there is unexpressed possibility, or function not performed, there is unsatisfied desire.
Discontent is a signal. It means there is a talent unused or a capacity not yet exercised.
Desire is possibility seeking expression, or function seeking performance.
Desire is not greed. It is something inside you that is able to happen, pushing to happen.
Man cannot live fully in body without good food, comfortable clothing, and warm shelter; and without freedom from excessive toil.
A full physical life needs healthy food, proper clothing, safe housing, and relief from crushing overwork.
Rest and recreation are also necessary to his physical life.
Rest and play are physical needs, not laziness.
He cannot live fully in mind without books and time to study them, without opportunity for travel and observation, or without intellectual companionship.
The mind grows on books, time to read them, travel, direct observation and good conversation with other thinkers.
To live fully in mind he must have intellectual recreations, and must surround himself with all the objects of art and beauty he is capable of using and appreciating.
The mind also needs enjoyment: art, beauty and objects it can appreciate, not just work.
To live fully in soul, man must have love; and love is denied expression by poverty.
The soul lives on love. Poverty takes away many of the practical ways love can be shown.
A man's highest happiness is found in the bestowal of benefits on those he loves; love finds its most natural and spontaneous expression in giving.
The deepest happiness comes from giving to the people you love. Giving is the natural language of love.
The man who has nothing to give cannot fill his place as a husband or father, as a citizen, or as a man.
With nothing to give, a person cannot fully play their roles at home, in society or as a human being.
It is in the use of material things that a man finds full life for his body, develops his mind, and unfolds his soul.
Material things are the vehicles. Through them the body lives fully, the mind develops and the soul opens.
It is therefore of supreme importance to him that he should be rich.
So being rich is not a side ambition. It is a top priority for a complete human life.
It is perfectly right that you should desire to be rich; if you are a normal man or woman you cannot help doing so.
Wanting to be rich is right and healthy. It is the natural pulse of a normal human being.
It is perfectly right that you should give your best attention to the Science of Getting Rich, for it is the noblest and most necessary of all studies.
Giving this study your best attention is not shallow. Every other meaningful pursuit in life rests on it.
If you neglect this study, you are derelict in your duty to yourself, to God and humanity; for you can render to God and humanity no greater service than to make the most of yourself.
Ignoring this study fails your duty to yourself, to God and to other people. The greatest service you can give is to become everything you are capable of being.
If you can say these seven lines from memory, you have Chapter 1.
